Praying for My Mouth and Heart

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

It’s all about the flow from the inside to the outside. This is the last line of David’s magnificent psalm that begins “The Heavens declare the glory of God.”  It’s a prayer to be “pleasing” to God in all we do, and that’s the goal of our lives, isn’t it?  Or shouldn’t it be?  I love how David is hoping that what’s inside him — “this meditation of my heart” — and what’s outside of him — “these words of my mouth” — are both “pleasing” to God.  Sometimes we do things according to proper form, but our ‘hearts are not in it’.  Sometimes we think and feel all the right things, but don’t do anything about it. God wants us to get both “heart” and “mouth” right – both inside motivation and outside action.  David would have enjoyed and maybe been reassured by Jesus’ thought that, “A person’s mouth speaks what their heart is full of.”  Once the “meditation of my heart” reaches a certain level inside us, it begins to overflow into the lives of others — good or bad.  David finishes the thought by reminding us that God’s ‘inside’ is “Rock” and God’s ‘outside’ is Redeemer.  It is the solid, dependable nature of God to act as our generous, sacrificial redeemer.  Let’s fill our hearts to overflow with that today.

I love you Lord for who you are and what you do.  May the inside of my life be full of you and my outside express it to my world.  Amen.
