Praying for My Hands, Knees and Heart

Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come…(Isaiah 35: 3-4)

Isaiah is writing about the days of the Redeemer — our days. I wonder why he chose these three particular anatomical parts? My hands do the fine-work of my life — the writing, cleaning, cooking, touching. I need strength to do them carefully and well. My knees take me to where the work is. I wonder if Isaiah’s parents taught him to ‘lift with your knees’. I need steady knees to guide my feet to the right places and bear the burdens I find there. My heart contains a lot of fear, which John tells me is the opposite of love. If I really believe “your God will come” it makes all the difference to my heart, knees and hands. Which of yours needs the most help today? Been cramping, buckling or worrying lately? This passage is not a prayer, it’s a directive to us. God wants us to give our parts a good talking to and affirm the basic truth of our lives, so we aren’t feeble, giving-way and fearing people today. God is coming … our God!

Lord, thank you that you minister to all of me. May my parts work together for you today, inspired by the fact that you have come and are coming. Amen.
