Praying for the Way

“You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”  Jesus answered, “I am the way… ” (John 14:4-6)

What do you suppose he meant by “the way”?  Jesus said so very much with so few words — that’s why following him is so exciting/challenging: we are betting our lives on truths we can’t hardly explain.  When Jesus said, “I am the way” I’m supposing he meant at least three things.  1.  Jesus is our set of directions.  How he talked, how he spent his time and how he thought are our right-turn, left-turn, continue on.  2.  Jesus is our  mode of transportation.  ‘Planes, trains and automobiles’ are all the philosophies, religions and creeds, but we get where we are going via Jesus.  He transports us.  3. Jesus is our journey.  Jesus’ “place where I am going” is eternity with God.  Once we connect with Jesus, we have begun to be where we are headed. Thomas speaks for us all: humanly we don’t know where Jesus is going or how to get there.  A daily walk of faith is how we slowly, progressively, and intimately get to know Jesus as our “way” and our destination.

Lord, I want you to be my way through this day and this life.  Help me understand what that means for how I use my brief, precious visit to earth, and do it.  Amen.
