Praying to be Called Forth

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. (Isaiah 40: 25-26)

Who God is defines who I am.  A simple look into the night sky, or into a baby’s eyes or a rose blossom should raise the question in our minds: “who created all these?”  We didn’t do it and random chance didn’t do it.  The One we worship and pray to did.  And suddenly we have an intimate connection with everything that is because we know this God.  I love the way the passage describes the “great power and mighty strength of God” in terms of God’s personal knowledge of every star — knowing each “by name” and none “is missing.”  God knows you that way, too.  You are also being “called forth” to shine.  You may be one of billions, but because God knows you and calls you that makes you wonderfully special and unique.  Listen for God’s call and come forth on your cue.  Be the one God knows and calls today.

Lord, forgive my desire to be ordinary. You know me and your great power and mighty strength want to work through me.  I accept your definition of me and will go forth into today by faith and with gratitude.  Amen.
